Simulation of transient cavitation processes in diesel injectors using KIVA with a Homogeneous Equilibrium Model

چکیده
Abstract The high speed, transient cavitating flow distribution inside diesel injector nozzles with consideration of the opening and closing needle valve is calculated using a generalized equation of state (EOS) to describe the fluid density, a homogeneous equilibrium model (HEM) for phase change, and an arbitrary moving mesh to account for needle motion. The KIVA-3V code was modified for the generalized equation of state, and an isothermal acoustic speed formulation, related to the void fraction in two phase flow, was used to account for the rate of fluid volume change due to pressure changes (dV/dP). The needle valve motion was implemented by exploiting the piston motion feature already available in the KIVA code, using the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) approach. Cavitation zone formation and development were simulated and compared in three-dimensional real-sized nozzle models for both conventional multi-hole and group-hole arrangements. The effects of geometric factors of the group-hole nozzle on the discharge coefficient, area contraction and density variation were investigated. The temporal evolution of cavitation during the opening and closing of the needle valve was also studied. It is shown that pressure waves and transient flow effects brought about by the time-varying needle motion significantly affect the flow structure and cavitation processes.

Numerical Simulation of Cavitating Flows in Diesel Injectors by a Homogeneous Equilibrium Modeling Approach
Due to excessive stress in the orifice, cavitation occurs in high-pressure Diesel injectors. As experiments are very hard to manage for injection conditions (small-scaled, high-speed flow), a numerical model seems to be the right tool to get a better understanding of the flow features inside and at the exit of the injector nozzle. The purpose of this paper is to present a simulation code based ...
متن کاملModeling Low-Pressure Injections in Diesel HCCI Engines
Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) combustion is being considered as an alternative to conventional engine combustion systems due to its high efficiency and low engine-out emissions. To prepare a homogeneous mixture for diesel HCCI combustion, two types of low pressure (5MPa~20MPa) injectors were considered: a swirl injector and a multi-hole injector. A modified version of the KIVA-...

Cavitation and turbulence inside a diesel injector play a critical role in primary spray breakup and development processes. The study of cavitation in realistic injectors is challenging, both theoretically and experimentally, since the associated two-phase flow field is turbulent and highly complex, characterized by large pressure gradients and small orifice geometries. We report herein a compu...
متن کاملInfluence of nozzle geometry and injection conditions on the cavitation flow inside a diesel injector
Cavitation and turbulence in a diesel injector nozzle has a great effect on the development and primary breakup of spray. However, the mechanism of the cavitation flow inside the nozzle and its influence on spray characteristics have not been clearly known yet because of the internal nozzle flow complexities. In this paper, a comprehensive numerical simulation is carried out to study the intern...

For Diesel engines, the determination of the exit conditions of the injector nozzle flow is of great importance because it greatly influences the spray development inside the combustion chamber and hence the combustion process. In addition, it is relevant to know the flow conditions to provide the initial conditions for spray models. Since the possibility of experimentally observing and measuri...
